Introduction

The Center for Comparative &International Education (CCIE) at the Research Institute of Higher Education (RIHE), Yunnan University is proud to launch a high-quality interdisciplinary academic platform to promote comparative and international education in western China. Over the past 10 years, RIHE has been actively engaged in international collaboration with scholars from the USA, Australia, Sweden, Thailand, and Taiwan. It has hosted a Fulbright scholar and a Fulbright student from the USA, held numerous international guest lectureships on campus, and has facilitated international conferences and field study trips that have explored unique cultures in and around Yunnan province. In 2018, RIHE launched a 3-year project titled “New Trends of Chinese Minority Education in the Globalized World” with the purpose of establishing a solid and sustainable international academic cooperation with leading U.S. and Australia universities. In 2019, the project held the second conference to strengthen partnerships. Due to the travel restriction from the COVID-19 in 2020, the third conference was not able to held as planned. However, the academic collaboration has since evolved into the establishment of the Center, which will serve the international academic and research activities for both Chinese and international scholars and to afford students the opportunity to explore broadly and build community.

The goals of the Center

• To emphasize the importance of learning from other cultures to improve on understanding our own;

• To gather together a working group of internationally recognized scholars, interested in ethnic minority education in China and abroad;

• To encourage international exchange among faculty and students;

• To develop joint degree programs with universities outside of China;

• To host visiting professors to teach graduate courses for the RIHE;

• To organize regular international conferences;

• To work cooperatively in the training of graduate students from Yunnan University’s School of Ecology;

• To apply for international grants.
